High performance film deserves high performance stretch film testing. ESTL’s Film Performance Tester delivers realistic stretch film testing.

ESTL’s Film Performance Tester has been developed to offer stretch film testing in representative conditions. Stretch film tests can be done at different constant speeds. Variating speeds as found on industrial wrappers can be simulated as well. The simulation of variating speeds is a unique feature which is only offered by ESTL’s Film Performance Tester!

Test programs

Ultimate

The unwind, wind, peel off and stretch force are measured in function of the pre-stretch. The pre-stretch is increased till breaking point. The speed during the test is constant and can be programmed between 0 and 4000mm/s.

Consistency

A certain number of meters is tested with a constant speed at a certain pre-stretch level. The variation on the following parameters is monitored: Unwind, wind, peel-off and stretch force. Optional the unwind noise can be monitored as well. The test speed can be programmed between 0 and 4000mms.

Wrapper test

The machine will constantly increase the pre-stretch until breaking point. While doing this, the unwind, wind, peel-off and stretch force are monitored. The machine uses a speed profile which is similar to a stretch wrapper. Rotation speeds of 50 rpm can be tested. The ‘response delay time’ can be altered to simulate various stretch wrappers.

Wrapper consistency

In the wrapper consistency test a certain number of meters is tested with a constant pre-stretch level. The film runs following a given speed profile which is similar to a wrapper. The ‘delay response time’ as well as the rotation speed can be set. This allows the recreation of real life situations.

Puncture

The stretch film is brought to a certain condition of pre-stretch and tension. In a next step the film is clamped by a canvas. Finally the film is ‘puncture’ by a probe. The machine comes with 3 different probes: puncture, dart and tear resistance probe. The pre-stretch, tension and puncture speed are programmable. The software calculates the maximum force, absorbed energy and displacement of the film from first contact of the probe till break.

Relaxation

The film is brought to a certain state of pre-stretch and tension. Afterwards the evolution of the forces in each segment of the film is monitored in function of the time. The film line doesn’t move during the measurement.

Tear propagation

The stretch film is brought to a certain condition of pre-stretch and tension. In a next step the film is clamped by a canvas. A small ‘spear shaped knife’ is used to make a small vertical cut into the film. Once this cut has been made, the canvas will unclamp the film. After one second the wind spindle will start to pull on the film with a constant speed. The other shafts are blocked. This generates a pulling force in the film after the initial cut. The machine will monitor how long it takes and how much force to break open the full film height.

Cling

The stretch film is wrapped in a controlled way with a certain pre-stretch and tension around an ellipse shaped profile. A motor driven contact roll removes the air caught in between the layers of film. The forces required to peel one layer of film away from the other is measured. The software calculates the maximum and median value.
